trans component slippingcode P1870 for a GM vehicle is "trans component slipping" i have a 97 Pontiac sunfire with the same code. turns out to be my torque converter not locking up. if its your torque converter it should not cause any damage to your vehicle unless the slipping causes it to overheat. ive had this problem now for 40,000 miles with no problems other than a 2 to 3 Miles per gallon drop in fuel economy. check the condition of the Transmission Fluid, if its red or pink, its good, but if its brown and smells burnt it needs to be changed.

other causes for transmission slipping are worn out bands, low fluid level. if it seems to accelerate good and has plenty of passing power its most definitely torque converter not locking. you can do a quick check by traveling down the highway at a set speed and wiggle the throttle back and forth. if the rpms don't change its locked in, but if the rpms fluctuate its not locking. if your symptoms the same as mine when the vehicle is fully warmed up, shut the engine off and restart it. if it then locks in you have a worn out throttle body. theres a plunger in the throttle body that hangs up in its bore. to rebuild the throttle body the cost is around 500 dollars. that's why i havent done it lol i hope this info helps you out any
