Turtles sleep with their eyes closed under or above water. They tend to be cranky if you wake them up though (trust me, I know) If it is the winter you have to watch out to make sure that they don't try to hibernate though. If you keep waking them up and they start to stop eating than they are very likely to die. Winter is the roughest part of a turtle's life in captivity. Keep them warm and have a light so that they never know that winter has come and gone.
they bury themselves in mud at the bottom of a deep body of water, a lake for example. They stay dormant for the coldest part of the winter, and absorb oxygen from the water through their skin.
