My wife went through this today. We purchased the car in New Mexico and paid sales tax there. We are not in California and she went to register her car and was charged almost $1500.00. They claimed that this was the difference between the sales tax paid in New Mexico and what she would have paid in California. Also, they would not accept payments and would not accept credit card. It had to be paid cash, up front. So your answer is YES. At the same time, why is California 10% higher than New Mexico?
I only know about Oregon law and you won't be able to register the vehicle with the Oregon DMV unless you can find someone with an Oregon address to assist you in lying about your residency. I don't think it will help you anyhow. You could get fined in California for not having your car properly registered in California and we all know California needs money right now! Plus it depends on how California goes about collecting it's sales tax, so there may be no getting around it. A lot of states ask for a sales receipt even if you bring it in from out of state. Maybe someone who knows California law can give you an answer from that perspective.
No. You only pay sales tax if it's a California company in this case.
I just called the California DMV and asked this same question. To avoid the CA sales tax you need to either; 1. Flat bed the vehicle out of California and then register it in Oregon or 2. Have the dealer deliver it to you out of the state of California. (I'm thinking of having it delivered just across the border in Ashland.) Essentially, you can not operate the vehicle in California before it gets registered in Oregon. When I asked this question of auto dealerships they were totally confused. You will need to educate them . . . lol.
Yes, but if you have a driver's license from Oregon or Montana and show it to them at the register, they will not charge you the tax.
In California you will pay the saled tax when you register it.
Merchandise bought in state some states don't charge you Sales Tax but most do. Oregon for example doesn't.
Sorry no. The state of California does not care where you live normally. if you buy it here you pay state sales tax.
you pay the tax of the state that you bought it in
There is no sales tax in the state of Oregon.
Probably not. You paid sales tax in Oregon when the car was purchased. When moving to California you didn't have to pay sales tax on all your other possessions, did you? You'll probably have to pay a tax on the car's value when registering it in CA. Probably not. You paid sales tax in Oregon when the car was purchased. Probably what ever state you register the car in would collect the taxes.
Yes, but you pay the sales tax to the state you register it in. Where you live. They will make you pay it when you get your license plates. You find more at http://CarBuyingHowTo.com
