You should use a thermostat gasket along with the thermostat housing ring. The gasket should be replaced every time the thermostat housing is opened.

When reattaching the elbow, be careful not to pinch the gasket. I used a little form-a-gasket around the edge of the joint just to be sure I won't see a leak if the gasket doesn't seat quite right.
