To replace a starter in a 1985 Olds car, raise the front end of the car with a jack, Next, remove the two support bracket bolts at the transmission and pry the support bracket away slightly to obtain access to the starter bolts.

Take the positive cable off the battery, then you have to remove the inspection shield on the transmission and then take the two bolts out of the starter
To change the starter on a 1985 Chevy Celebrity: 1. Disconnect the battery ground. Use gloves to avoid getting battery acid on your skin. 2. Raise the car and put on stands. Be sure the parking brake is on. 3. Remove the wires to the starter solenoid. Take note of their routing . 4. Some starters have a brace at the front of the starter, remove it if present. 5. Using an appropriate socket remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place. There may be shims on the starter, if present save them for re use. The starter should now pull forward and then lower it from the engine. Replacement is the reverse of the above.
Disconnect the battery. The vehicle will probably have to be raised to reach the starter. The starter has two or three bolts holding it in, and wiring attached. Remove the wires remembering where to put them back. Remove the bolts and pull starter out.
Passanger side, above the starter. You have to remove the starter (don't detatch any wireing, just the 2 bolts). Once you have the starter out of the way, you can remove the fuel filter. Good luck, it's a PAIN!

i don't know if the engines are similar enough for me to answer you question but i have a '85 sr5 and when i took off my starter, all i had to do was remove two bolts from behind the starter. you really gotta get down and dirty because they are BACK THERE! hope this helps you out.

Before removing any wires, be sure to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Label all of the wires that go to the starter and then remove them. Take a photo if possible to avoid any confusion. The starter mounts with two bolts. Simply remove the bolts and wiggle the starter loose. Once it is loose remove the bolts and pull the starter away from the engine to remove it. Installation is the opposite of removal. Be sure to inspect the starter bushing and add a little bit of all purpose grease if necessary. Fastener torque for the mounting bolts is 21ft/lb.
