No Cam Belt as we know it, but it does have a serpentine belt. This acts like a large old type fan belt driving the water pump, but also loops around the Power Steering pulley and air con pulley. If it breaks in service it will not cause any damage to the engine but you will loose power assist steering and cooling, so obviously you can not use the vehicle until it is replaced. A handy man could do this, as it is a strait swap, with no need to set engine timing etc as you would with a Cam Belt.
Chain
it has a cam chain , change about 1000,00 miles
camchain camchain
The 2003 Ford Escape has double overhead cam (DOHC).
The 2003 Ford Explorer has single overhead cam (SOHC).
The 2003 Ford Focus has double overhead cam (DOHC).
The 2003 Ford Expedition has single overhead cam (SOHC).
The cam (timing) belt should last for the life of the vehicle. A Ford Ranger has a smaller motor, that with the right care, should not have to have the cam belt changed.
