Great question. Turns out -- after 2 hours of confirming this - that a PCM and an ECM are the same. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is the early name, updated by Ford in the mid 90s to Engine Control Module (ECM). When you go on ebay or a parts website you'll search for ECMs for your model, year and engine size.
All ECMs are programmed for year, engine size, transmission and emission control standards so you'll need a match. Getting your ECM code and finding one like is one of those things you'll probably need expert help with ... an ECM replacement project is not for the faint of heart.
Where is the ECM located on ford expidition 4.6
In the truck

Yes. They're interchangeable. If the F150 has a manual transmission, the ECM will need to be reflashed for the automatic transmission on the Expedition.

Either the PCM, or ECM will have another code in it. Diagnose and repair that code and the companion dtc set code will go away.Either the PCM, or ECM will have another code in it. Diagnose and repair that code and the companion dtc set code will go away.

On the Escort the ecm is called the pcm (power control module). It is located in the console inside the car just below the heater controls.
PCM = Power Control Module. It is the car's main computer/brain. Also can be referred to as the ECU or ECM.
