Not necessarily but 99% of the times a whining noise emanating from the pump depicts it to be damaged by friction. It has minute fins which can be scratched by contamination or usage of wrong oil viscosity or with an insufficient oil level.
Sometimes a blockage in the system (usually pipes/valves) causes it to wear out quicker and has to be replaced along with the problem diagnosed and repaired or the new pump will also wear out soon. Also change the oil and properly bleed the system for any air trapped within.
The power steering pump pulley nut is loose. Or the power steering pump bearing is bad. On my 1998 it was just the loose nut.
It is important to know where the fluid goes in a car. The power steering fluid goes in the power steering reservoir. It is under the hood of the car under the cap labeled power steering.
Check your power steering fluid level.
power steering fluid is fluid that makes the power steering pump work and it goes in the power steering pump under the hood.
Most likely it is low power steering fluid. Check fluid and see if noise goes away.
Easiest way is to spray some lubricant on it while it is running. If the sounds goes away you know its the belt. Could also be noise from the a/c clutch, power steering pump, etc.
DOT 3 power steering fluid.
Check your power steering fluid level...Most likely it is a fluid level problem. My 1994 S10 will whine when its level is low. Fill'er up and whine goes away. Hope this helps...
extremely hard to turn the steering wheel
The power steering fluid goes below the intake manifold in a 1992 BMW 325i. This is where the power steering reservoir is located.
The output of a power steering pump is the high pressure side which goes to the steering box. It creates hydraulic pressure which makes steering much easier.
it could be air in your power steering system. check the fluid level and add fluid as needed.then to get the air out all you need to do is turn your steering wheel full left and full right(engine on ) do it 5 times and check your fluid level if is low add more keep it up until the noise goes away.('''it may take about 15-20 full turns to get rid of that noise''')ifafter all this the fluid keeps droping and the noise continues then you have a leak somewhere in the power steering system.
