Turtle shells are a part of a turtle's body! A shell is basically made of bones (60 meshed together) and their spine is actually embedded into its shell. Contrary to what they show in Cartoons, turtles can't take of their shell any more than you can take off your skin.

What helps the turtle to get in their shell?

Turtles do not 'get into' their shells, they are born in their shells which are part of their bodies (they can not come off) and their shells grow with them.

Can turtles walk around naked?

All animals walk around naked except us. Humans are the only animal that wears clothes. If you are asking whether a turtle can come out of the shell, then the answer is no. The shell is part of the turtle, and if the shell is peeled off, part of the turtle is ripped off and the animal will die. It would be like pulling off your ribcage.

What do turtles have on their backs?

Do all turtles need land?

A land turtle needs water to drink, but not to swim in. Aquatic turtles live in the water, but they need to come out of the water several times a day to dry off their shells. If they don't, the shell will grow fungus and mold and will become infected.

Can tape rek a turtles shell?

I don't think that tape would be good for a turtle's shell. It could melt then stick to and burn the turtles shell when he is under his heat lamp or take off a scute or two when you tear it off. Taking off a scute early will reveal the bone under and that can develop an infection and hurt the turtle. If you are having trouble telling your turtles apart and that is why you want to put tape on one then I would recommend looking at the turtles bellies or plastrons. The plastrons often have unique marking on them which would make it easy to tell the turtles apart. Eventually you will be able to tell the turtles apart just by looking at their shells. I can and I have 15 turtles :). But anyway please don't put tape on your turtle, it could fall off in the water and then get eaten by a turtle too.

What is wrong with your water turtles shell -check out the discussion area for more detailed info?

I have recently come into posession of a baby painted turtle, When he was caught he had one eye gummed over. He also has a shell that was chipped on the edge. Since i have setup his tank his shell has gained more white spots (and some what looks like some sort of abrasions) also another piece of his shell has fallen off the edge (next to the original chip in his shell) it might have been loose before and just fell off. what should i do to fix him?

How do sea turtles protect themselves from danger?

Adult sea turtles do not have many predators. However, they are prey for a number of species of sharks. The shell of the sea turtle provides protection, even though sea turtles cannot pull their heads or fins inside their shell like other species. Sea turtles can also remain underwater for long periods of time, thereby fending off attacks from land animals.

Are turtles killed for their shell?

Why would you want to paint a turtle's shell anyway - unless it's for identification. A more sensible procedure would be micro-chipping ! It's permanent and doesn't wash off ! Anyway - to answer the question - so long as you use lead-free & solvent-free paint it shouldn't harm the turtle.
