Turtle shells are a part of a turtle's body! A shell is basically made of bones (60 meshed together) and their spine is actually embedded into its shell. Contrary to what they show in Cartoons, turtles can't take of their shell any more than you can take off your skin.

I don't think that tape would be good for a turtle's shell. It could melt then stick to and burn the turtles shell when he is under his heat lamp or take off a scute or two when you tear it off. Taking off a scute early will reveal the bone under and that can develop an infection and hurt the turtle. If you are having trouble telling your turtles apart and that is why you want to put tape on one then I would recommend looking at the turtles bellies or plastrons. The plastrons often have unique marking on them which would make it easy to tell the turtles apart. Eventually you will be able to tell the turtles apart just by looking at their shells. I can and I have 15 turtles :). But anyway please don't put tape on your turtle, it could fall off in the water and then get eaten by a turtle too.

I have recently come into posession of a baby painted turtle, When he was caught he had one eye gummed over. He also has a shell that was chipped on the edge. Since i have setup his tank his shell has gained more white spots (and some what looks like some sort of abrasions) also another piece of his shell has fallen off the edge (next to the original chip in his shell) it might have been loose before and just fell off. what should i do to fix him?
