yes
Probably distributor cap, ignition timing, timing chain/cam timing or burned exhaust valve(s). Pick one.
replace the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, set the timing, replace the air filter and fuel filter.
The 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 3.4 liter V6 engine has a timing CHAIN
Loosen distributor until you can barely turn by hand. Time by ear until engine sounds good, then drive under load (up hill). If you hear engine pre-detonation (pinging), retard timing slightly until it stops. Tighten distributor. If no ping..advance until it does, then retard just until it stops, tighten dist...........
0 it has a timing chain.
It doesn't have a distributor or rotor. It has a DIS (Distributorless Ignition System).
It doesn't have a distriburetor.
No you cannot set the timing it is controlled by the ECM.
A 1997 Monte Carlo does not have a timing belt just a chain!
i have same problem had to change the distributor
Car and distributor would have to be replaced
The original wire that goes to the + side of the coil will either be a steel wire or have a ballast resistor inline to cut the voltage to the points. You don't want that with an HEI. Either substitute a copper wire for the steel wire, or remove the ballast resistor and install the HEI.
