Protein skimmers to remove small amounts of water. They create bubbles and this becomes the skimmate. Also, some water remains in the skimmer when it is on.

In general people do not have to adjust their water or salinity because of skimmers.

It is important to match the size of the tank and the skimmer.

Can you use aqua safe for marine tanks?

Aquasafe detoxifies chlorine and ammonia and also contains elements which help restore / maintain the fishes slime coat, which reduces the stress which accompanies any water change procedure. In their advertising, Tetra claims it is safe for both fresh and salt water. However...My marine tanks have always been reef tanks which depend heavily on protein skimmers as their main form of filtration. The one time I used this product I was topping off a 250 gallon reef tank. I ordinarily don't use straight tap water for reef tanks, but my reverse osmosis unit had issues. After adding 10ml to 10 gallons and using it to top off the sump, the protein skimmer turned into a foam volcano. This effectively disabled my skimmer for 3 whole days! I didn't notice any toxic effects on my corals and other invertebrates and certainly not the fish, but there was definitely a noticeable difference from not having a functioning skimmer. Remember, this was 10ml in a 250 gallon aquarium with a 75 gallon refugium / sump! For a fish only marine tank with no skimmer, I'd say AquaSafe would be safe to use, but where a skimmer is used, stick with AmQuel, which detoxifies chlorine, ammonia, chloramines, etc. without adding anything which would cause frothing.

How do you vacuum a Doughboy and where do you plug in the equipment?

In order to vacuumn the pool you must first put in the vacuum and the hose. You can siphon the air out of the hose by putting it in front of the return to dispace all air in the hose line. Then turn off the pump. Insert the end of the vacuum line either into the port at the bottom of the skimmer in the pool or remove the skimmer basket and insert it in the bottom of the skimmer. Then after the line is secure, turn on the pump motor. Your vacuum should be ready to use (manually) or run automatically if you have an automatic pool cleaner such as an Aquabug. If you have a slimline skimmer there is a port located just below the skimmer door it is used for the vac hose. After connecting the hose you put your skimmer lid down inside of skimmer and then you can turn on pump. By doing it this way you can let skimmer basket catch all large debries. This saves on having to backwash so much.
