It definatly has to come out the bottom. The best way to do it is to disconnect everything that connects the engine and transmission to the vehicle and drop the sub frame with the engine and tranny still intact.
The Windstar transmission comes out the bottom. Support brackets are used to 'hang' the engine from the top in order to take the trans out. Ambitious project, but certainly doable.
