Both tractor (facing forward) and Pusher props (facing aft) have been used and the German Dornier D.O.X. had twelve engines in six power naccelles- each containing two engines back to back or (tandem order) as the Germans called it.These were high powered Daimler Benz aircraft engines-purpose built as aircraft engines-not adapted or modified motor vehicle mills like the Packard V-l2"s were (which were quite effective) The D/O/X."s There were two of them delivered to Italy (had to clear the Heights on delivery flights- that"s Fifteen Grand right there!) had Fiat A-22 custom engines rated at 580HP each. These were liquid cooled. They could operate at high RPM for sustained periods of time, and this was an advantage for a flying boat.It is obvious the front and rear engines counter-rotated to equalize the torque.
