my mechanic says it has a timing chain, but I've read where others say it has a timing belt. I need to know so I'll know when/if it needs changing. I have 117,650 miles on the 2004 Honda Odyssey EXL.

Honda Odyssey 2004 has not got fan belt. It has got 3 ( three ) belts - timing, power steering and alternator A/C belt.
All Honda 4 cylinders from 2003 and up have a timing chain except the 2004 & 2005 Honda Civic which has a belt. 2006 and up Civic has a chain.
You don't as the 2004 Honda CRV uses a timing chain and not a belt. It should last the life of the engine.
The 4 cylinder '04 Accord has a chain. The V6 has a belt.
