Feel the heater hoses see if one is hot and the other cold. May be airbound and have to be bled. Sounds like you have air in the heater core. I had the same problem on my 99 Ram. You will have to "burp" the air out of the system.

Most likely it's the heater control valve. If the heater control valve leaks a little it can allow a small amount of heated engine coolant to circulate through the rear heater core.

The MOST COMMON PROBLEM with that engine is that the intake manifold gasket BLOWS / LEAKS water into the engine crankcase and mixes with the oil. Replace the intake gasket and FLUSH The engine oil and change the oil filter SEVERAL TIMES Untill engine cleans up.
