Yes - Rwanda 1994 - 800,000 Tutsis slaughtered by Hutus on racial grounds. Their weapon of choice: the machete, a type of sword that is curved, and wider at the end.

There was also a genocide of millions of Armenians after World War I, in Turkey, by fanatical Moslem turks, inspired by radical Islamist imams [clerics]. When General Ataturk came into power, he ordered the massacres to stop, but almost none of the clerics stopped preaching hatred of the Armenians. He jailed all of them, and had many executed. After that, the massacres stopped. He then put in place a secular form of government, and banned the clerics from holding political office. Only recently have Moslems clerics been allowed to have any formal say in the government in Turkey. However, an increase in persecution and attacks toward Christians and Jews has come in with allowing imams to make statements at government meetings.

What does this have to do with the Holocaust in WWII Germany? Numerous German officers had stayed in Turkey after WWI. They were on hand to observe how the Turks went about turning the citizenry against the christian Armenians [and Jews]: gradually. First, thru inflammatory preaching in the Mosques; then, thru Propaganda; until there were gangs of thugs, running thru the streets with machetes, killing any Armenian they could find.

When these officers returned to Germany, they applied propaganda techniques to rid themselves of those most likely to disagree with their socialist political ideology, called Nazism: Jews, and the christians who dared to hide and defend them.

There have been a number of incidents of genocide since WW II. These include the killing fields of Cambodia under the Pol Pot regime, the slaughter of East Timorese by Indonesia, the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, the mutual slaughter that took place in Rwanda between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes, and several more.

The Ottoman Turks slaughtered more than a million Armenians in 1915-6, but still won't admit it. This refusal to come clean contines to hold up Turkish membership in NATO.

Hutus and Tutsis in Africa about fifteen years ago - more than 700,000 hacked to death in about six weeks.

When the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia in the chaos after the US withdrew from Vietnam, they instituted a reign of terror and killed two million out of seven million Cambodians, which, in percentage terms, may make them the all-time champions. Perhaps not a true genocide, since it was Cambodian Communists killing other Cambodians, for political, not racial or ethnic reasons.

"Ethnic cleansing" in the former Yugoslavia as "Christian" Serbs mass murdered Muslim Bosnians. US peacekeepers, including American troops, continue to try to prevent further slaughter.

Nowhere near an exhaustive list.

Some people try to insist that white treatment of Native Americans in the US was genocide. This overstates the case and cheapens authentic genocides. In a true genocide the policy is to kill them all. In the US the policy was to take over the continent, and dispossess the Indians, but peaceful co-exiestence was sought, where possible.

Why do some historians have different ideas about what happened to the Jews?

It is about valuing one source, or type of source over another. They more have different ideas over why things happened, there is almost complete agreement over what happened. If the question refers specifically to the Holocaust, there is a need to separate out those historians who disagree over the interpretation of the actual evidence and those who ignore large parts of evidence because of their political agendas. Failure to recognize the magnitude or scope of the Holocaust is commonly called Holocaust Denial. Typically any number less than 4.5 million Jews as the death toll in the Holocaust (usually less than 1 million) is indicative of Holocaust Denial. The most common reason for Holocaust Denial is in order to delegitimize the State of Israel. In their view, the only reason why Israel is a legitimate country is because of the Holocaust and therefore if the Holocaust is shown to be false, Israel's raison d'etre melts away. (The argument is flawed since Zionism existed before the Holocaust and also helped numerous Jews in the Arab World who were not part of the Holocaust.) The other group that routinely engages in Holocaust Denial are Anti-Semites who see the Holocaust as a means for Jews to gain sympathy.

What happened right after the Holocaust?

Right after the holocaust, nothing really happened. Jews were stranded. No homes No food. Where were they to go? German Nazis were deining it even happended. Jews had no homes since the Nazis had taken them away. They had no money since that was taken away too. Jews started to walk there way into a town. Maybe got a job and made some money. Some Jews got on a boat to America. No all stayed in Israel or Germany. Oskar Shindler saved tousands of Jews by buying them. You can go online and look up Laura Hillman. She is a holocaust surviver and author of I will plant you a lilac tree. You can find her and send emails. The holocaust is a sad terrible thing. HITLERS A JERK!

Why is the Holocaust studied in schools?

The main reason is that the Holocaust is generally regarded as a key event (or series of events) in modern history. It is widely talked about, and one needs to know what it was. Some will say that another reason is make sure that nothing like it happens again. However, this reason is not as convincing as similar things have in fact happened since 1945.It is widely seen as one of the key events of the 20th century.
