Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary when the Serbian's assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (of Austria Hungary). As soon as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany was obligated to declare war as well but the fact that German Unification had allowed for Germany to become such a military powerhouse gave the German's a bit more confidence than they should have had. Germany took over the war against Serbia and declared war on more countries as global leaders sided with Serbia. This aggression from Germany took this war to the global scale.
