Historically, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) faced extreme religious intolerance. In the 1800's, they were driven out of their homes several times, forced to leave with only what they could carry. Many men were beaten, tarred, feathered, and unjustly imprisioned. Their homes will pilliaged and burned. Their prophet and the patriarch were murdered. After they were driven out of Kirtland, Ohio, their sacred temple was ransacked and used as a barn. They were forced to leave Missouri after the governor of the state issued an Extermination Order against them, saying that the "Mormons must be exterminated or driven from the state."

Early missionaries faced mob violence, several were beaten or tarred and feathered, and a handful were shot. Being run out of town was a common occurrance, and many baptisms had to be performed at night to hide from persecuters.

Today, Church members most commonly face taunting and mocking from others. Converts are often disowned by their families and friends. Anti-Mormon sentiment is popular, there are countless internet sites, radio and television programs, and individuals spreading lies about the Church or mocking the things they hold most sacred. At large Mormon gatherings, there are almost always several Anti-Mormon demonstrators, some of which have resorted to aggressive tactics. Several times a year, reports of Church Meetinghouses being vandalized reach the newsmedia.

Why are Mormons weird?

Most Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) are relatively normal! Some may regard them as 'weird' because they tend to be very morally conservative and adhere to Biblical values. While this may be uncommon in today's society, it is hardly unusual among religious people. You can get to know real Mormons online at Mormon.org/people.
