Watercraft Hull Maintenance

It is important for watercraft owners to check their craft’s hull for damage before they travel. Sanding, hull scraping, and washing releases pollutants bound in the craft’s hull. Therefore, underwater cleaning of hulls can contaminate the water.

How do I replace a through hull vent on my boat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, hopefully you can locate it on the inside. Remove the clamp and hose connected to it. should be a nut on the fitting. remove the nut and vent removes from the outside. Make sure to put the proper vent back in. If it is a fuel vent it is required to have a screen in it.

How do you fix a spongy floor on a boat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I assume it is a wooden boat/floor .... odd location for this question .... but whatever! If the floor is part of the boats hull, then take the boat out of the water ... allow it to dry completely. Check the wood with a knife/screwdriver etc.. to see if it is rotted/flaky. If so, replace the wood. If no, you can fiberglass the wood on the underside and give it a weatherproof coating on the topside. There is a dampness issue so check the balance of the hull for any concentrations of dampness that need attention. Added comment- Above answer is good, but to clarify if floor is spongy you must remove & replace old plywood deck, usually in entirety but some have successfully spliced in only a part. All is better because you know what you have underneath that way. Check stringers below deck, if rotted or softened much you must replace or boat will be unsafe. Check transom, if it is wet or has rot you'll have a far larger project than just the deck to contend with. Remove old flotation foam if present because it will be saturated with water if the deck has this problem. If any white fungus is present paint with antifreeze to kill it, then wait a few weeks before waterproofing wood with the same polyester resin/hardener you'll use to seal both sides of the deck plywood & use for glassing in stringers & deck top surface. Use stainless steel wood screws when attaching new deck to stringers, then glass the surface after that. There are a number of good web pages boat owners have chronicled their deck repairs in, worth looking at.

Why do metal ships float?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because the material used to build them is formed into a shape that will displace a

lot of water. As the shape settles into the water, once the weight of the displaced

water is equal to the weight of the object, the object floats at that depth and doesn't

settle any further. If the material were all rolled into a solid lump, it would displace

much less water, and would sink like a rock.

What are hull numbers usefull for?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) or the boat registration numbers on the hull? The HIN is placed on the boat during manufacture. It is similar to a VIN number on a vehicle. The boat registration number on smaller boats is a state registered number similar to your vehicles licence plate. Where as on larger vessels the hull numbers are federal issued numbers.

How do you separate the keel from the hull on a 1978 tide craft fiberglass fish and ski boat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm not certain about your specific model of boat, but on most fiberglass hulls, there is a rubber bump or rub rail above the waterline. If you pull off the rubber center piece, you will find either rivets or screws that will allow you to pry the hull apart once removed. Please note that I have seen info stating that some hulls may warp after removing the top, so this should probably only be done as a last resort.

Why does a boat need a keel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Without a keel, it would impossible to go any direction except downwind. The boat would act like a car on extremely slick icy road. You must have some resistance (friction) to change direction from downwind. So without the keel, the boat could only travel downwind. Is the wind always blowing in exactly the correct direction you want to go?

There are many variants: Some single-hulled sailboats have V-hulls, while others are flat-bottomed. Others are twin-hulled and these are called catamarans. Yet others are called trimarans because they have THREE hulls.

What is the fuel capacity of a 26 ft seawolf center console boat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To put it in a simple way, the dual console is those boats that have two consoles. One side of the dual console boats is used for the helm, and the other is used for passenger seats. There is an open space between the two consoles. This place can be used for walking from the front side of the boat to the back side of the boat.
