Overdrive ON is the normal position
But if you are towing something or driving in hilly country where the
transmission is constantly shifting from overdrive to drive , then you want to
switch the overdrive off
Only if you want to shut off the overdrive feature , because overdrive is the normally allowed position
Anytime you don't want the transmission to shift into overdrive * if you are towing something , or if you are driving in hilly country where the transmission is constantly shifting between drive and overdrive , you can use the button on the end of the gearshift lever on your 1998 Ford Expedition to shut off the overdrive ( the word OFF will light up on the end of your gearshift lever )
It means you turned it off, usually a little button on the end of the shifter.
On a 1998 Ford Explorer, Overdrive Band Failed Off means that the vehicle did not shift into Overdrive properly. The band for this gear should be serviced soon.
Overdrive allowed is the normal position
Normally the overdrive is allowed , so the overdrive OFF light does not light up When the overdrive is switched off , the overdrive OFF light will light up to let you know that the overdrive has been switched off
A malfunction has been detected - get it checked out
According to the 2003 Ford Expedition owners manual : If your Overdrive Off light is flashing : " have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible otherwise damage to your transmission can occur " ( it might just be a sensor )
On a 1997 Ford Expedition : It may not shift into overdrive until you are travelling around 50 MPH (80 Km/H) and you will see the RPM on the tachometer drop. * If the overdrive has been SWITCHED OFF using the switch on the end of the gearshift lever, then OFF will light up near the end of the gearshift lever.
In most cases drive with overdrive especially if maintaining over 45 mph. Take out of overdrive if on slippery pavement
On a 1998 Ford E-250 : The transmission control switch is on the end of the gear selector lever Push the button and the word OFF should light up near the end of the lever when the overdrive feature is turned off
