From most likely to least:
Ignition problem (worn plugs, old wires, cracked distrib. rotor, worn distrib cap) - replace bad parts. You should really replace all of the above and the valve cover gasket also. Use only spark plugs of OE type, construsction, configuration, gap, and heat range. My personal preferance is for Denso when available and NGK otherwise.
Low fuel pressure or contaminated fuel. Add fuel or replace filter, pump, or regulator depending on which is the cause.
Bad throttle position sensor.
Replace as needed.
alot of times dick heads do motor swaps on cars and charge people way more than it should be and they dont change over the most simple cheap things you could think of that is probly the same motor but out of a junk yard. The best thing you can do is buy spark plugs, and wires, cap, and roter, oil filter, put new oil in it, and cheack all your fuses, and it will make a differance! if not than it mite have some electric probloms if it does work that motor is gona be high maintinince any way, down the line your gona have to change the water pump, headgaskit, valve covergaskit a whole bunch of stuff you sholdint have to do and its a shame but i bet money that dude keept your old motor and gave you a crapy one out off a junk yard that he probly said had 60,000miles or somthin but it was really like 260,000miles happins all the time
Black smoke is caused by excessive fuel in the engine
a blocked fuel filter causes spluttering and stalling although it could be a gypsy curse
Hey.Is it a 6 or v8? and have you checked it for any trouble codes?
could be a vacuum leak
whats the first step on repairing my 1993 Toyota truck 22re with a high idling problem thanks Brian
First check your throttle body sensor and then your (iac) motor. Last but not least it could be your plenum gasket or a leak in your vacuum system
cause if its idling at zero rpm the motor is off ...
Check out this link, this happened to mine Dodge Durango Maintenance and Repair - CarSpace Automotive Forums
It could be a dirty air filter or a dirty throttle body.
Manual or automatic transmission?
Check error codes (depending on which one you have or not). Check egr valve, fuel filter, clean throttle body and idle valve.
About 750-800 rpm for the manual and a bit higher for the auto so it idles in "drive" at about 750rpm when you have the brake on.
