Written orders, DD214, or plenty of witnesses (officers). If none of those exist...then quite possibly, the past...is the past. Be advised, at least during the Vietnam War the Bronze Star COULD be awarded for "Meritorious" achievement; as well as "Valor." If the BS was awarded for Valor then the "V" device could be worn on the cloth portion of the medal (or on the cloth ribbon itself). So...your Grand Dad was "told" or "recommended" for the BS...Meritorious or Valor? Meritorious BS (in Vietnam) were handed out as a matter of normal operations; the "V" device however took a bit more paperwork...and involved direct combat with the enemy...not just combat "operations" against a hostile enemy; but personal heroism. If your Grand Father's name is mentioned in an After Action Report (After COMBAT Action Report) which can be obtained from the Archives in Maryland (they're "normally" declassified in 3 year increments); then you might have some written evidence pertaining to going "about researching..." Having said "reports" specifically mentioning your Grand Father will enable military personnel to determine whether or not he rates that particular military medal. One step will lead to another from there.
