Why was Booker T. Washington on a coin?
To make things very short, he was born into slavery, rose from grinding poverty, got an education, and eventually became a college president and major spokesperson for the rights of black Americans. That's a set of accomplishments hardly anyone could have achieved, and certainly is worthy of commemoration on a coin. Just type the phrase "Booker T. Washington" (note the spelling) into any search engine and see how much information is available.
