I was an ADHD child mom tried everything to calm me down the worse it got the more depressed I got. one day I guess it was a cry for help or i am lucky that i didn't know what I was doing i tried to slice my wrist. that got me put in the hospital. after weeks of evaluations they put me on welbutrin and it helped i went from cs and d's to a's and b's. I did get off of it till just recently i experienced some mood swings and such. I was also a single mom for 3 years and divorced and when I met my current husband my brain tried to push him away thus the moods and such the welbutrin came to my rescue again. It has truly been a blessing in my life I dont know where I would be with out it

My daughter has been on everything imaginable, she did however take Strattera for a short time. She is 13 years old and currently on depekote. They can't make up their minds what to diagnosis her as, but when she was on the strattera she did lose a lot of weight, but she vomited everyday. She didn't have an appetite and she was alot more hyper. So we took her off that. Then she was put on Adderall and it made her dizzy. She had taken that several years before when she was about 9 years old. She was also on paxil for about 2 weeks when she was 11 years old which has caused her down fall. She was admitted into a physciatric hospital due to suicidal thoughts and basically going nuts. We have taken her off medications because they weren't doing any good at all. At this time if she misses a dose of her depakote we all just have to pack up and move out. Be very careful what you put your children on. We did find out, about a year later, that the new studies on paxil caused suicidal tendency. I don't know if as she grows older her problems get worse or if putting her on the paxil in the first place caused the chemical imbalance. I still don't think we've found the miracle drug combination yet, never tried her on welbutrin. Maybe that would be the next step.

akaleia's story

I am responding to the statement the user before me had with her experience of having her daughter on Paxil. I was 19 at the time and this was the first of any kind of mental medication I was put on, mostly for shyness and depression. Anyway, I gained 40 lbs on it, (I'm 28 now, it's still a struggle) and if I went even an hour without my dose of paxil, my face and hands would go numb and I would go into a panic fit, like a tatrum as a toddler. Mind you, I was on 40 mgs, I beleive.. it took a very long time to get off of. I even had to go down to 1/4 of the pill to wean myself off of it, eventually turning to Lexapro with good results. I would suggest a non-stimulant for her add, as well as nutrition, and just getting her involved in outside volunteering. Strattera is a good add/adhd drug. Discuss all of this with your dr of course. . Your post may be old, but maybe it will help others! Good luck, and once you find something that works, don't let someone talk you into something different!

Strattera and Concerta for two and a half years, and has worked well after finding the right combination of doses.( Strattera takes about 3 days to build up in our system, while Concerta takes less than an hour) No serious side effects, got better about having no appetite after awhile. Also good liver enzymes (must have blood work done to see how your liver is). Extremely expensive, though. (he's nine, now)

Is anyone taking a stimulant and a nonstimulant together for ADHD if so what combos are you taking?

My daughter is 11 and she takes a combination of Metadate CD and Strattera. Last summer we tried her on Strattera alone, we liked the 24 hour effectiveness and it seemed to help with her impulsiveness and mood, but when school started back, she still couldn't focus enough to study and do her school work. She would tell me she was daydreaming in class, and the other kids talking bothered her when she was trying to read or listen to the instructor, so her doctor, who is a child psychiatrist suggested we try them together. As we increased the dosage of one, we lowered the dosage of the other until we were satisfied that she could concentrate in class during the day at the lowest possible stimulant level. Again this summer we have taken her off of the Metadate CD and when school starts back we will give her a couple of weeks and then decide if we need to add it back in. My hope is that as she gets older she can learn to control her distractability and focus better so she can stay off the the stimulant medication forever. It is certainly worth talking to your doctor about. Good luck.

Is caffeine safe for everyone?

It is a common stimulant and if taken in moderation, it should be safe for anyone. Though I wouldn't be giving it to young children or anyone with an underlying health condition that could be worsened by this common stimulant.

Has anyone found Strattera to be as effective as Adderall XR for providing the motivation and energy to begin and complete tasks?

Strattera was a complete waste of time for me. Lots of side effects and no efficacy. Adderall XR is much better. Strattera seems to be useful for about 1/2 those who take it. Plus it's very new. Effects of low doses of stimulants are very well understood over time. NOT SO with Strattera, despite all the fancy marketing material. I had exact same experience as above post. Maybe Strattera is good at treating hyperactivity, but for motivation and drive it's terrible! Same here. Personally, I think Strattera is a drug they give people at first to see who's just trying to get speed from Dr.s and who wants to really get help. If you go through the hoops, I guess they assume your genuine. My doctor pescribed me strattera and when i took it i felt a no energy, i could not pay attention, and i felt depressed but then i took adderal and it was completely diffrent thing

Can you take phentermine and Strattera?

Ask your pharmacist to be sure. I would not leave this medical question up to anyone but someone whom you know is qualified to give you the correct answer as it may or could be life threatening,

Has anyone experienced tremors or vocal tics while taking Strattera?

ADHD and Tourette's syndrome are closely related; some people have both of these together. When a physician is initially screening someone for ADHD, he or she should ask about vocal tics to see if the patient also may have Tourette's. Strattera (or any of the other ADHD medications) can sometimes bring out these behaviors in people (not cause them--just "unmask" them). If this is happening to you, speak with your physician. Hope this helps! Dr. B.

Does anyone have info on Strattera causing psychosis?

I experienced what I believe was psychosis while driving. I had been taking straterra for 1 week when this occurred. I felt detached from reality, like I was seeing the world through the eyes of another person. I began having serious thoughts of suicide and went into what I believe was a full fledged panic attack. I pulled over and asked my wife to drive and I have since decided to not take strattera anymore or ever again. It was the most terrifying experience of my life.

Does anyone have a remedy for constipation while taking Strattera?

I got some relief by drinking more water at night, eating oatmeal in the morning for breakfast and exercise. I still have some abdominal pain from constipation but I am able to go to the bathroom regular. Also I don't take a dose on Sundays and my system seems to clear out. I'm going to ask my doctor for a different medication. I've been on strattera for 3 weeks and I've only gone to the bathroom twice. It's severe and painful constipation to the point that it bleeds. Havent tried anything yet. If anyone knows the answer to this question please share it with us.

What to do if you lose your locker key?

Talk to someone in the administration office, such as a principal. You should be able to ask for a new locker or to have the combination changed. Then be careful about who sees you using your combination and don't give your combination to anyone.
