The engine firing order is 123456. The spark plugs at the front of the car are starting from the passenger side 2 4 6 and at the windshield side 1 3 5. There is no distributor on a 1990 3.1 liter engine. They have a coil pack instead and are numbered 5 2 3 6 4 1 from the left. You need to look for the firing order for your specific engine. That's the order you place the plug wires in. Make sure the rotation of the distributor matches the firing order.

What size engine do you have? The 3.8 and 5.0 do have diagrams for wiring the firing order from the distributor. The 4.6 is distributorless. It is possible that your distributor is on wrong or that your wiring is incorrect if you have the 3.8 or 5.0?
all chevy V8 engine share the same firing order of 18436572 in a clockwise rotation of the distributor when looking at it from the top.
