Heater not putting out hot air when the temp switch is adjusted to hotter temp engine temp goes up and down.?

Thermostat is bonkers ... (it's attached to the engine) ... need new one.
Unless the engine is particularly under severe load or doing an inordinate amount of climbing with a heavy load, the temperature should stay fairly steady at all times. Abnormal temps like this are symptoms of improper water flow into and out of the engine block.
