Jack up and remove tires. Remove axle cotter key and nut. Remove ball joint cotter key and nut. Drop lower control arm and pull axle from spindle. To do this put castellated ball joint nut on backward and flush to protect threads. Strike balljoint nut with deadblow hammer while prying lower control arm loose. Its in the top of the head. You have to reach up between the gas tank and head and feel for the plug wire. pull the spark plug cap and its down a couple inches. use the factory wrench to get to it. Its a pain.
pull drum off and get an axle puller. Although correct this answer assumes you mean the rear axle. If that is the case pull the drum off after removing the wheel and remove four bolts holding the axle bearing to the differential housing (on opposite side of brake backing plate) and then use a reversible hammer (axle puller) to pull the axle out from the differential axle housing.
pull the plug on the bottom of the axle or remove the cover if there ins't a drain plug.
