The reason why the French were involved in W.W. One is that the Germans attacked the French through neutral Belgian via the "Schlieffien Plan " and that the German armies where to swing down towards Paris, however General Helmut Von Moltke modified the plan and the Allies were able to stop the German advance at the battle of the Marne, thus saving Paris . The French wanted to get back the provinces of Alsace-Lorraine that they lost in the Franco-Prussian war of 1877 and since they were allies of Imperial Russia , mobilized their armies when Russia were threatened with war by both Austria-Hungary and Germany.
