The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The Romans were unable to respond to these invasions effectively because of lack of political cohesion and infighting. Civil wars enabled the invaders to ravage Gaul for nearly three years and then move on to Hispania (Spain and Portugal) and then to north-western Africa. The emperor Honorius mishandled his relationship with Alaric, the king of the Visigoths. The Visigoths had been allowed to settle in the eastern part of the empire as allies. Alaric sacked Rome and his successor settled in south-western France. The Visigoths then took over Hispania. Some attempts to deal with the invaders were made, but by then their position and that of the Visigoths was too strong and infighting was persistent. In the end the western part of the Roman Empire came to be controlled by Germanic commanders in chief of the Roman army who installed puppet emperors and ruled for their own benefit. All of the lands of this part of the Roman Empire were eventually taken over.

The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years.

The western part of the Roman empire finally fell after being defeated in battle by Odoacer in 476. Odoacer deposed the child-emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and set himself up as king with no quibbling from the eastern Roman emperor. However the steps leading up to the fall had begun a couple of hundred years earlier.

It was the western part of the Roman Empire which collapsed. It disintegrated under the weight of the invasions by Germanic peoples. These peoples ended up taking over all the lands of this empire expect for Italy. Under this strain, this part of the empire lost political cohesion. There were continuous infighting and usurpations and this part of the empire no longer functioned. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years.

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
