It was just one form of outward demonstration of racism. Racism of all kinds is part of human relationships. It can't be eliminated, people have always and will always mistrust, fear, or hate people who are not like themselves.
Segregation was a method of keeping a group of people "in their place" by people who mistrusted and feared them. Many whites of the time feared that so many blacks joined for a single purpose could very possibly succeed. And it worked in the end, the segregationists were most fortunate that it was a non-violent revolution.

well... people who were 'not white' could not enter australia. even those who were in Australia at the present got treated differently than to the pure 'white' Australians. Non-white people weren't allowed in pubs, schools, down town, to the movies, beaches etc... Their life was cut short. They were treated differently than to the 'white people.' it was a hard life for them. ("aboriginals")
