depends on the make and model of the car,i have owned many vehicles with standard tranny ,the best were the ones with overdrive ,such as the 2000 Toyota corolla . i got an average of 38 mpg (Canadian) driving fron northern Ontario , to central newbrunswick at an average speed of 76 mph, with jackrabbit starts at lights in the citys

It's not just the type of car you have. It also depends on where you will be driving ( city or in the country). If you be making stops every couple blocks its better for you to have an automatic but if you are rarely making stops you would get better mileage with a manual.

There are some vehicles where the A/T equipped vehicle gets as good or better fuel mileage than a manual. Especially cars equipped with a CVT automatic transmission.
