Plate tectonics is responsible for the formation of Pacific islands. As plates move against each other, they generate friction which causes volcanic activity. Over time, the volcanic activity breaks the surface of the water and forms islands. This can take hundreds of thousands of years. The entire time, the plates are still shifting, causing this volcanic activity to create islands spreading out from the source. Hawaii is a perfect example of this activity.

The hawaiian islands were formed when the volcanic eruption spurred in the ocean floor and formed a volcano overtime. That is why Hawaii is made up of volcanoes. Also whale fossils were left behind and became part of Hawaii.

The Hawaiian-Emperor island chain consists of volcanic seamounts formed over a "hotspot" below the constantly-moving Pacific Plate. The spot is located just SE of the big island of Hawaii (which continues to grow from the magma released under it). The hotspot has existed for at least 82 million years.

The "newest" island to form over the hotspot is the Lo'ihi Seamount, which began to grow about 400,000 years ago and is still about 3000 feet underwater. It is expected to reach sea level in about another 100,000 years.

Magma rises from the Earth's core to the seafloor and erupts and accumulates to form volcanic islands. Then the island moves and a new piece of lithosphere covers the hot spot.
