There are little black boots covering plungers in the door that can get worn down. I found that if I glue a nickel to the door where it presses on the plunger when closed, it fixed the problem. Hope it fixes yours!

the dome light fuse...any other questions
The manual running light switch may be "on". It is located on top of the steering column, near the dashboard guages, in a 1998 Legacy. The switch operates the lights without requiring the ignition switch to be on.

The 2005 Subaru backup light relay switch can be found beneath the drivers side dashboard. The backup relay switch will be above the brake pedal.
I have a 1997 GT, and it is located on my transmission near the arm.
probs a mechanical problem
The 4wd is automatic in the 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagons. There is an empty fuse under the hood that has a cover that says FWD that can be used to disable the 4wd and force it to be in front wheel drive, but by default, there should not be a fuse in it. When there is a fuse in the FWD connector, the dashboard will have a warning light that says FWD, indicating that you do not have 4wd enguaged. If the light is not lit and you do not have 4wd then you have a transmission issue that will likey need the expertise of a transmission specialist. Check the transmission error codes (as opposed the the standard engine error codes.) They will likely help you pinpoint the problem.
I would bring it in, because you can never be sure
Usually that means there is a fluid down low like tranmission fluid or brake fuild or any fluid but if they are full then I suggest you take the car to the dealer to check it out.
