∙ 9y agoFor the sake of distinguishing between something that is true and something that is (only) believed to be true, a classical Platonic explanation of different ways of knowing is decisively helpful. This explanation posits different levels of "knowledge" as available to human beings, with each level attached to different aspects of the outside world as well as to different functions of the human mind. Where one is able to distinguish between these levels, there one is also able to distinguish (and quite clearly) between what is true and what is (only) believed to be true.
