First, find out as much as you can from your family. Your parents or aunts and uncles (his children) should at least know what branch of the service he was in and whether he fought in Africa, Europe, or Asia. They might also know, at least approximately, when and where he was captured. If he was in the air corps you can be fairly certain he was shot down over enemy territory and captured. If you know his name, rank, and service number the Department of Veterans Affairs might be willing to provide you with a copy of his service record which should specify when and where he was captured and what unit he was in. With that information it should be possible to research news reports and histoprical accounts of the fighting at that time and place and determine what happened.
