i did go to the local police dept.and they said i would need to go to the same county the auto was at. i live in one county and the auto is 75 miles away in another county. but thanks anyway.

You can not find a car registration number using the chassis number. You can only identify it by using the VIN, or vehicle identification number.
Did you report this to the police? If you did, surely you turned over the vin number. It's not appropriate for you to be tracking down the vehicle owner.
