"... it TRIES to unlock..." is the 'key' here...Since we know a sliding door will not open until it is unlocked, I would investigate the locking mechanism.See "Related Questions" below for some specifics - note the one about the door ajar problem has lots of information about the door lock actuators too.

I had the same problem and what I did was when all else failed I got my older daughter to sit inside and kick the heck out of the rear of the sliding door while i pulled on the handle, once it popped open some on the rear I had to use a tire iron to pry it open the rest of the way. All I found was some some had not seen a small piece of card board McDonald's french fry box) and it got jammed up in there. GOOD LUCK
If your dog can open the sliding door, you can use a broom handle to keep the door shut by wedging it so that the door will not slide. This will allow a child to open the door and block the dog from opening the door. You could also keep the door locked and teach the child how to unlock the door.
the trick is in the name really, you slide it. ???
A disconnected door handle linkage can cause your sliding doors not to open. The locking mechanism may not be fully disengaging, of which will cause your door not to open.
The fuel cap/door would not affect the door operations.See "Related Questions" below for a few other ideas for misbehaving doors
