There are several ways:

2) If you know the first few letters, consult a dictionary.
3) If you know the approximate meaning, look up a similar word in a thesaurus.
4) If you know what field the word is used in, go to an online article on that subject and use the "edit, find" menu on your browser to look for words of similar spelling in the article.
5) If still in doubt, ask here, and you will get some likely spellings to verify.
For most words, if you know the spelling, the IPA and even voice samples are available at online dictionaries. You can also try the English language words at the site Howjasay. For non-English words, sites like Forvo give examples by native speakers.
Where the spelling is unknown, you can try spellcheckers like Google and Microsoft Word. Getting close to the right spelling could take several tries, as different letters can have the same sound. If it is a word with a foreign language cognate, typing that in a Translate program will often reveal the English word in its various forms.

The words are in alphabetical order, which allows you to find the correct definition if you have the correct spelling.
Straightforwardness. You spelt it right, and I didn't think it was even a real word! I had to look it up!
Use spellcheck, or go to google and type the word in. Try to see if there's a "reputable" source that uses it in a sentence and look at how they spell it. Or google up "alternative spelling of _____". That's how I do it, at any rate...
