Pos & neg posts are not the same size on post type. You can buy terminals separately at ato parts store and still salvage the cable itself if need be.

A "battery disconnect" is nothing more than a special SWITCH designed and manufactured to be able to carry very large [heavy] electrical current. The one with which I'm familiar mounts on the positive battery terminal after the cable has been removed, and then the cable connector is attached to the output terminal of the disconnect switch. This switch allows one to totally and completely "kill" the battery voltage to the auto circuits, without having to use a wrench to loosen a battery terminal clamp and manually "wrestle" it from the terminal.
The fusible links are all on the large terminal on the starter - The one the battery cable hooks to.
I think the negative terminal is under the fuse box to the left; you can barely get to it. However to jump from or to the Silhouette, you don't need the negative terminal. To jump the Silhouette, just attach the negative cable to metal, preferably of the engine block. To jump from the Silhouette, attach the negative cable to the large bolt about 10 inches to the right of the battery.

The fusible links on my '89 Z24 are located at the starter solenoid where the end of the positive battery cable attaches to the large terminal. There may be a fusible link near the positive battery cable in the 10 gauge wire (not the heavy gauge one). Good luck.

On my 2004 Mini Cooper I jacked up the car and removed the power steering fan (two 13mm nuts) to gain access to the battery terminal on the starter solenoid (the one with the battery cable). I attached a battery charger to the terminal and powered the door locks long enough to open the driver's door. It's tight fit, but I have large hands and was able to do it.
In general, an ammeter needs to be installed between the device providing electricity and the device(s) using electricity. This kind of connection, where you break the wire and install the meter across the break, is called a "series" connection. In an automobile, the ammeter should be installed in the smaller of the two positive (usually red) battery cables, the one that runs from the positive battery terminal to the alternator charging terminal (and also to rest of the non-starter electrical loads). Here is a simple drawing: B+ ------(\)---------- A+ ---------- ACC ST Where: (\) = The Ammeter B+ = Positive Battery Terminal A+ = Alternator Charging Terminal ST = Starter (large cable) ACC = To vehicle Accessories (small cable) i.e., ignition, lights, etc. ------ = smaller (typically 10 gauge) red wire = larger battery/starter cable (typically 4 gauge or larger) Notes: * Do not install the ammeter in the large cable that goes to the starter. * The small cable from the Alternator to the battery may be attached to the battery terminal, or it may be attached to the starter terminal. Electrically these are equivalent. * In order for the ammeter to properly show whether the battery is charging or discharging, the ammeter must be installed between (a) the battery and (b) both the alternator and fuse block/ignition switch. * If the accessory cable is also attached to the starter, it will have to be removed and attached to the alternator side of the ammeter or to the alternator as shown in the drawing. * Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the electrical system. ALWAYS wear safety googles whenever working on or near the vehicle battery.
