In my old 1999 Octavia I TDI (81 kW/110 HP) it was every 80,000 km. On the current 2005 Octavia II TDI (103 kW/140 HP) it is every 120,000 km. The interval is increasing in newer models as the materials keep improving. On higher performing (and more expensive) cars the trend is the chain again. im looking for the answer as well, tho i think it is around the 80k mark on your car.

cheak behind the carpet in the passanger side wall of the boot the connection for the window washer might of come loose, either that the hoze to the motor on the boot lid

I've seen taxis in Athens with 450,000 km and still going strong. It's the kind of car you sell much before it needs a major overhaul, extremely dependable. I sold my 1999 Mark I TDI with 250,000 km on it, no oil consumption, no problems, average 6.3L/100 km. Make sure you get only the VW-spec oil into it when required and don't change more often - sheer waste of money.
