remove fan assembly (allen head bolt is in the back in a hole) - Jay 2004 passat tdi
In my old 1999 Octavia I TDI (81 kW/110 HP) it was every 80,000 km. On the current 2005 Octavia II TDI (103 kW/140 HP) it is every 120,000 km. The interval is increasing in newer models as the materials keep improving. On higher performing (and more expensive) cars the trend is the chain again. im looking for the answer as well, tho i think it is around the 80k mark on your car.
google search freds tdi page there is a lot of helpful info

when you remove the engine cover, you see small sphere closest to your alternator. Remove that sphere (vacuum reservoir) and you see outlet pipe from Main radiator. Remove the plastic elbow and you see the thermostat on your engine. Cheers!
If you can remove the fan first it makes it easier, you need to know how to use a fan spanner. Otherwise you still can do it, you need a long 15mm spanner to release the tention on the belt by the tensioner, then you can remove and replace the belt.
On my 2005 Octavia II TDI (103 kW/140 HP) it is every 120,000 km. The first one is still a couple of years away. 4 years or 60,000 miles whichever is first (apx £325 - feb 2009)
