The idea of dominance is a much abused and misused one. Leadership is a more descriptive term. Leadership is established by control of resources, control of behavior, and stewardship. A common misconception is that one must eat first or go through doors first or hold one's head higher than a dog in order to rank above it. It isn't who goes through the door first that matters, but who DECIDES who goes through the door first. (That's control of behavior.) Violence is not necessary to establish pack leadership. In fact, it is counter productive because it shows the dog that the biggest bully wins. Use your innate advantages to establish your position in the pack, ie your intelligence and your pocket book. See links below. =Other contributors have said:= * Make them sit before you let them go outside or back in. * YOU go in a door way first, dog second. * Make them wait before eating. Take a treat away from him while he is eating it. Then give it back. * Walk on leash. You are in control. Don't let the dog pull you where he wants to go.

You mean "who is the pack leader"? Because that is the way dogs see it. Be the one who feeds and provides fresh water, shelter, and a warm bed. Those are all things that a pack leader does. Take your dog for walks and tug him back gently if he tries to walk ahead of you. The pack leader always walks in front, and enters and exits a door first. Use treats to reward all good behavior. Never, ever, hit or strike a dog. Hitting confuses and frightens them, and they will learn to bite back out of fear. A pack leader will gently nip a misbehaving dog to get it's attention, so you can get your dog's attention with a quick "nip" by using your thumb and fingers in a "dog mouth" position to poke him gently in the side when he does something wrong. This is meant to get his attention, not to hurt him! If you think like a dog, your dog will understand you and reward you with his everlasting love and devotion.

Answer 1

Don't beat him, just show him the way you can alter his life. Have him realize that you can control his life. Let him see what you can do. Reward him when he listens to you (over something big though). Maybe he'll learn! Dogs also can actually sense your "energy", meaning they can kind of tell what kind of mood/feeling you have. So to help cooperate with him, keep a good "energy". It'll help. Also whatever you do, don't let him walk in front of you, that mean he's boss in dog if you let him walk in front of you.

Answer 2

He might be to stubborn, you might not be able to do anything. But whatever you do, DON'T BEAT THE DOG. There is also a show that is called Dog Whisperer, made by Cesar Millan. He is really good at solving dog problems. You should find out when is the next time he goes out to find more dog problems.

The best stage during a dogs life to confront and get to know it is when it is still a puppy. The best way to do this is by first giving it a name that it can get used to. It is important that you make sure to take the puppy for a walk everyday and that you have lots of open place to play with it.

1. Always be the first to go through doors (even if it's by one step)

2. Have your meals before your dog gets there meal

3. Try to keep you dog below you (don't always let your dog be up on furniture at your level)

4. When playing tug of war win more times than you lose (if you win all the time the dog will start to get bored of the game and if you lose all the time your dog will think it is stronger than you)

5. Never shout, yell or hit your dog if it does something wrong, it only reinforces bad behaviour and your dog will start to mistrust you

6. Make your dog work for things like toys and food (e.g make your dog sit before he/she gets there food, this will get them to respect you more)

7. You have to decide things like walks/treats not the dog (e.g the dog might beg for a treat, but it's up to you when he/she gets it)

Around other dogs, a lifted, high tail shows the highest rank in the pack or group. A tail ducked under the dog shows a submissive or low-ranking dog.

You cannot make an animal change its personality. If your dog doesn't want to fight to be the dominant animal, it won't do it.

You don't. You never want a very dominant dog, that causes fights and behavior issues

Why does my dog straddle and sit on the other dogs in my home?

My dog does the same thing! I think that its a dominance thing. Like when my dog puts his paw on my arm while I'm petting him, he's controlling my movement - he's trying to keep my hand there. I think he wants to show that he is dominant over my other dog by keeping him in a particular spot - almost like holding him down... And making a show of it.
