on the top of the steering column, close to the floor is the neutral safety switch. it is a plastic (usually white) piece with wires plugged into it. a screwdriver will remove two screws one on eash side. You most likely tripped the NSS =Neutral Safety Switch. I'm guessing you saw a spark while you were messing with your lights. A mechanic can fix this for you.

Try moving the gearshift as you try to start the engine. If it will try to crank when the gearshift is slightly out of Park or Drive, you probably just have a mis-aligned neutral lockout switch.
