If the manifold is leaking you'll be able to look at the edges and see exhaust residue at the leakage spot. You may need a flashlight and inspection mirror to see under the pipes. It's easier to spot if you look under the hood at night with a light and no other ambient light sources around the car/engine. If you've got a feather duster, you can also use it to move around the manifold edges; if it's leaking, you'll see the air blowing it. Just don't use any duster that's polyester or plastic, as it'll melt when it touches the engine.
As far as driving, if it's bad, I wouldn't recommend it. Even if it's small leak, you run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in the car, which can creep up on you until it's too late.
If you must, then drive with all the windows down so you've got plenty of ventilation.
