The way I tell is two ways. First if the engine is cold and stopped take your hand and spin the fan,if it spins fairly easy you can bet the clutch is bad. The other way is block the radiator with some cardboard as tight as you you can and run the motor at high idle until the temp. gage moves to 3/4 or so hot (about 230-240 deg). Listen and you will hear the fan pick up speed and make more noise if it good. After test pull out cardboard and let motor run until it cools back down because a motor will get hotter after shutdown.
When can turn the fan freely with no resistense
If the clutch is bad, you would be able to hold the fan and start the car. The fan will not spin if the clutch is bad. If the clutch is good the fan spins at a high speed.
A/C fan clutch is bad. A/C fan clutch is bad.
When the engine is cold, open the hood before starting up. Try and spin the fan by hand. The fan should spin with considerable resistance. If the fan free wheels with no resistance then the fan clutch is bad. If the fan does not spin at all, the clutch is seized.
if fan make a loud noise your fan clutch is bad
over heat
Unless the fan clutch is bad just remove it with the water pump. Otherwise it is a 36mm fan clutch wrench that most auto parts stores have for rent.
I think this has an electric fan clutch. If it does then check to make sure it is bolted on good and if that isn't the case then a wobble would indicate a bad fan clutch.
They can remain locked up and sound like an airplane prop or they fail to lock up when needed causing the engine to run hot.
You can tell by how much higher the clutch pedal is to the brake pedal. when new pedals are at the same height.
does it have an electric fan? if so, it could be bad. or if not elec fan, the fan clutch. or just got a bad t'stat
If your hear "ticking" and have to use WD40
