Jack up the car in the front. , imagine the wheel as a compass, and grab it on the East and West sides, push and pull on it.

If you feel like its loose, watch the outer tie rod end where it attaches to the knuckle or suspension - if you see it moving with any play on that joint, chances are you need an outer tie rod end.

If you don't see it moving there, chances are you need an inner tie rod.
