Very. The evidence from Rome itself and also from Roman cities like Pompei shows a high level of technology and urban development which would not again be reached in Europe until some 1,000 years after the fall of the Roman Empire. Also in the fields of science, philosophy and law, later Europe could only build on the foundations that had been laid by the Roman civilization 1,000 years earlier.

The Romans were very civilized. Romans cities had public baths complexes that were used daily by people. There were hot and cold baths, dressing rooms, and it was a social place to go. Many houses had running water and there were apartments, shopping malls, and arenas. Fountains and aqueducts brought water to cities. The system of roads allowed people to move goods and travel fairly fast. Each Roman city was laid out on a grid and in the center was a market area and government complex of courts and offices. The Romans established a rule of law, and were organized into various departments. People went on vacations and there were resorts. Goods from around the empire were sold and Rome was a city of many cultures and people.
