Antonio López de Santa Anna (1794-1876) He died June 20 1876
In the 1830's, in Coahuila y Tejas, the president of Mexico, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, abolished the Constitution of 1824, putting in its place, an anti-federalist constitution. This angered the Texans and the Mexicans living in Texas. The new laws were unpopular throughout Mexico, which lead to violence in several states. On October 2nd, 1835, the war began in Texas with the Battle of Gonzales. The war ended at the Battle of San Jaciento when the General Sam Houston lead the Texan army to victory in just 18 minutes. The Texans snuckinto the fort that the Mexican army was occupying and sneak attacked 'em. Santa Anna was captured shortly after the battle when Mexican prisoners sighted him in a soldiers uniform, trying to escape. They yelled, "El Presidente, El Presidente!" The Texan officials and Santa Anna signed a treaty, creating The Republic of Texas. But there are rumors that Santa Anna refused to sign and the Texans put a gun against Santa Anna's head and said, "Sign it or die." That seems pretty plausible to me. Hoped this helped.
He didn't. Contrary to popular belief, he was one of the few that survived the battle and was executed by a Mexican Firing-Squad.
General Santa Anna led the Mexican army against William B. Travis and the Texas army and volunteers. After 13 days of bombarding the Alamo, Santa Anna made his final attack on March 6,1836 leading 1800 troops against 200 Texans. All of the Texans died.
