After it defeated the forces of the assassins of Julius Caesar (Brutus and Cassius) in the Liberators' Civil War (43-42 BC) the thee men agreed to divide the provinces of the Roman Republic into spheres of influence in the Brundisium Agreement (40 BC). Mark Antony took charge of the east, Octavian took charge of the west and Lepidus took charge of Hispania and Africa (northwestern Africa). Mark Antony and Octavian tightened their grip of their areas and Octavian found a way of ousting Lepidus.
