Christianity did not contribute to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. It became the religion of the empire in Late Antiquity and gave the empire a stronger sense of cohesion as most of the people in the empire had become Christian. Pagan Romans thought that Christianity made the empire weaker by weakening the fighting spirit of the Romans. However, this was a biased view.

The western part of the Roman Empire crumbled under the weight of the Germanic invasions. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years. Historians call the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part the Byzantine Empire.

AnswerChristianity did not directly cause the fall of the Roman Empire, unless we accept the pagan explanation that this came about because the old gods were angry. However, the enormous amounts that Constantine spent from the state treasury for the construction of magnificent churches, and the funds he committed himself and his sons and successors to spend for the upkeep of the Church, led to the impoverishment of its citizens. The destruction by Christians of the great library at Alexandria was only one of the religious crimes that led to the Dark Ages of ignorance and falling economic activity.

For reasons unrelated to religion, the Empire split into Eastern and Western Empires. Then the barbarian invaders finally defeated the Western Empire. But long before then, Rome had become a pale shadow of its former self.

What role did christianity play in the fall of rome?

I think that Christianity played an important role before and during the fall of the Roman Empire. Historians explain that this made Roman citizens become pacifist which made it easier for the barbarians to invade Rome. This explains why it was so easy for the barbarians to infiltrate into the city of Rome. Another reason why Christianity held a major role for the decline of empire was that money was used to construct churches instead of having been used to uphold the Roman Empire.
